We gather at the beautiful Wisteria Hall in the Seattle Arboretum. The day includes updates on the organization, networking with Collaborative colleagues, and a CLE/CE on Collaborative Mediation.

Coffee & pastries (starting at 8:30am), lunch, and a yummy afternoon surprise are all included.

CLE Description:

Collaborative Practice and Mediation

Collaborative law began as an alternative to family law litigation.  Over time, other professionals, primarily with backgrounds in mental health and finances, have joined attorneys in interdisciplinary teams.  We’ve seen the two-coach model, the one-coach model, the referral model, and a host of other models.  It has taken many years of experimentation to develop the current model we are familiar with.

Mediators were initially excluded from collaborative practice.  Years later, we began “collaborative mediation” except no one knew what that meant.  It seemed duplicative, undefined, and confusing; or efficient, sensible, and needed.

And so the exploration continues.  We are going to be scientists, carefully observing snippets of a “collaborative mediation.”  We will gather our observations from a series of role plays, to generate theories of what collaborative mediation is.  What does it provide that is similar to or in contrast with our current experience of collaborative practice?  And what does it reveal as the nature of collaborative practice generally?

Learning Objectives

By the end of this CLE, participants will be able to:

1. Describe a variety of collaborative practice models that vary in professional composition, function, authority and role.
2. Define collaborative practice beyond the Uniform Collaborative Law Act.
3. Identify likely impacts of process choices on the function of the collaborative team.
4. Have an expanded capacity to match process choices to particular clients, balancing efficiency, cost, and level of support.
